Traditionally, most teachers in Hong Kong did not feel confident in teaching sex education. Thirty years ago, most primary schools only offer talks on physical changes in puberty like menstruation and nocturnal emission. Throughout the years, society has changed. A lot of students in lower secondary forms date and fall in love, and some may participate in compensatory dating and sexting. Sex education is now being offered in most schools, some with comprehensive programs that include discussions on media literacy, pornography, prostitution and prevention of child sexual abuse.
However, sex education is still not a mandatory subject in schools and some students complain that teachers touch the topics only superficially, leaving questions that they are interested in unanswered. So, as a doctor and a sex therapist, I am still seeing young people infected with sexually transmitted diseases because of ignorance, or couples having sexual dysfunctions because the spouse is addicted to watching pornography since teenage. Actually, offering good and comprehensive sex education can help people become healthier and happier.
