In the mid-19th century, the area between Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun was a crowded Chinese residential area centering around Tai Ping Shan Street, Market Street (Po Hing Fong) and many smaller streets such as Caine Lane.
The plague outbreak of1894, caused many of these residential building to be demolished. At the same time, subsequent redevelopment also erased many of these streets that made up the residential area. The seminar will talk about the residential buildings and streets surrounding the central district from past to present.
